A snap shot of my Melbourne trip I took at the start of the year. I think this city is awesome and the country side beautiful. I love to visit Melbourne but I couldnt live there in its coldest months. The art that covers the walls of each and everyone of its city alley ways is a true indication of the talent and culture this city has. This artistic expression expands much further then the city limits with many walls, shop front and alley ways being painted in its outer suburbs. The countryside and seaside also offer the avid photographer endless opportunities. I cant wait to go back there, maybe when it warms up a bit.

Well after looking at the shots again I would say that most of the riders from this session enjoyed the conditions on offer and why not, its been a while. Some of the guys had the place wired, I got a couple of screamers of Joe Clarke and a nice one of Cade Sharp. Here is a few more from the session.

I woke up Friday not expecting alot and that's what I got. I havnt shot for a while so I thought it would be good to get my eye in on Friday for the predicted swell on Sunday. It is now sunday and I am speechless, even worse waveless for the day. Somedays you wake up and it is better than you expected and you will talk about it for days maybe months. Then there are days were you get so amped leading up to it you can have restless night sleeps only to feel empty and questioning your chosen hobby when its so bad you dont even go in. Shorey 15.3.10

You either love Mooloolabah shorey or hate it. I personally am not that fussed on surfing it but it can be one of few options in those dreaded SE winds. Body surfing it on the other hand is an absolute ball, especially with the backwash and a bit of size. I also find this place extremely fun to shoot at. The wave is obviously predictable and it doesn't offer that many different angles of the riders but sitting right in the impact zone where every wave barrels over you is a lot of fun. Scratching under a few rogues, riders air born inside closeouts, cleaning sand out for days... like I said it can be fun. Just not for weeks on end. I did miss the peak of the swell from the cyclone for shooting but here are a few shots from a week before. It was late afternoon, super clean almost like oil.

This morning the waves were bigger yet again. The water was the cleanest it had been in a week and the sun was making more of an appearance which made shooting enjoyable. The swell unfortunately was hitting this spot way too straight making it break more right off the groin then left. There was a few riders picking off the lefts including the rider in pics who scrapped into a few of the bigger ones. Gutsy, considering majority were closing out. Here are a few from the session including a few arty ones.

Well this morning was a true surprise. The sky was clearer, the water was cleaner and the surf a little bigger. Due to the unexpected conditions there wasnt many people in the water, that and the swell was hitting a little straighter. Here are some shots I liked from the session.

Weather can be a fickle friend

After waking up early 3 days in a row, anticipating light winds and some fun swell, I was finally rewarded on Monday morning. There was still plenty of swell around, here was 3ft with the odd 4ft'er, the water was dirty due to run off and there didnt seem to be too many riders in the water. Including this session I have had 4 clean sessions with fun waves to shoot lately. Here is a few empties from Monday morning. Stay tuned for more pics of those other sessions.

Quiksilver Pro

Well trust me to pick the only day there is a Tsunami warning to go down to the Quiksilver Pro. For the 100's that gathered on the coastline we were all left a little flat when the big wave did not eventuate. It was still the best result given the destruction it could cause. It also kept the crowd down in the surf. Turned out to be a great day with a few of the boys heading out anyway on the low tide when the waves were more bowly. Here is some pics I capture over the day. The lighting during the day was tricky with overcast conditions and harsh light when it did poke its head through.

I wasnt expecting clean waves when I woke on Sunday. With still a little bit of swell in the water and offshore winds it turned out to be a great day of surfing. Conditions were that good I traded the lens in for the board after about half an hour. That and the fact the lighting was average at best. Here are some shots.

I havnt shot from land for about 6 months however due to time I chose to take a snapshot of the conditions. Seemed to be plenty of movement in the water and winds were light. Not the greatest light for shooting but here you go.

It's been awhile since I've posted because I have been down in Melbourne on holidays (pics to come). In the mean time the swell has appeared on the sunshine coast along with dreaded easterly winds. Not all is lost, a little bit of searching and the odd window of light winds has seen many score waves. I havnt shot alot lately but did get these the other day. Have never really shot mbah before but thouroughly enjoyed it. It can make you feel as though you are only millimetres from a damn good working over. Fun stuff!!!

I got to the beach early this morning and to my surprise there was some photogenic waves around. If you were patient enough you could get a decent wave to ride. After the mornings conditions I was keen to get more of the action. The conditions had taken a turn for the worse so I was left to grovel in a messy little shorebreak. It was still fun and I managed to capture a few shots. The lighting was awesome, pity about the waves.

There was was some size on the open beaches yesterday, however it was a bit messy. I scored some smaller but ok waves in a more protected spot. The occcasional freak set did come through providing a fun playground for many.

Tye turned 10 this month, time sure is flying. His birthday is around the NRL grand final and he loves his football. I decorated his birthday cake in a style which I thought he would like. It turns out I kicked a goal, loved it. Its meant to be Broncos v Storm but I still dont want to talk about that game.

A few months ago I managed to get the opportunity to paint a TSB in Caloundra. I thought it would be a great chance to paint my favourite topic, surfing and also show it in the public domain.
